The Story of Dunder, the Australian reindeer
This project was a great opportunity to work with a large company. I joined Mighty Nice, an animation studio in Chippendale, Sydney, as a 2D intern.
The advertisement was a creative blend of 2D and 3D animation. It is a story about a lesser-known reindeer known as Dunder, from Australia, who helps Santa save Christmas.
As part of the 2D team, I animated a silhouette loop of the reindeer and the sleigh flying through the sky, used across multiple scenes. I also did clean-up on line work in other scenes.
It was an invaluable experience to work on a commercial animation project and within such a talented team. Bonnie Forsyth , the 2D director, was great to work with and taught me a lot about the pipeline process.
Sushi Train
Have you ever wondered what goes on in the tiny world of sushi? Conductor Soy stops the train to allow Wasabi to board.
This project was so fun to work on, especially developing the characters! Using the features of the objects to create little people was an interesting challenge.
I saw a man die- Cameron Semmens
This video is a typographic depiction of the short story ‘I saw a man die’ by Cameron Semmens, which I created with 2 classmates. It was a great experience in storyboarding since not only did we have to design the animation but also how we were going to incorporate Semmens’ tragic short story.
We used a washing machine to emphasise how ordinary people can be struck by traumatic events, even as a bystander.
The Cycle
This is a small part of a major collaboration between 60 people, a snippet created by myself and two other classmates. It was animated to a musical collaboration between William Barton, an Aboriginal composer, and the Australian String Quartet.
This project looked at the negative cycle relationships can sometimes fall into. We might grow, but then loose ourselves and feel like we're drowning. Finally there is the painful new growth that ultimately leads to personal rejuvenation.
Since our animation ran onto another part made by other animators, you can see the first few seconds of the next piece with the formation of the downcast head.
Preparation
Iris returns! (Look in the stop-motion section for the major project on her)
This is a hand drawn animation I did on sticky notes! Iris enters the factory and switches on all the lights. She can feel the excitement of plucking the poor chickens. (She is a sadistic witch)
I completed this project in 2 days, from the animation to the sound composition. It was a fun time-pressure challenge and I love the messy aesthetic that echoes the insanity of the character.
